Digital Humanities x Data Science

Are you a data scientist with a love of history? A literature buff who’s curious about computing? A creative who needs to cozy up to algorithms?

Announcing a new track for Data Science majors interested in continuing their study of the humanities: the Emphasis Domain in Cultural Analytics.

All DSCI majors learn the foundational techniques of data analysis and choose a field of study — an “emphasis domain” — in which to apply these skills. Starting in Fall 2023, students have the option to declare their emphasis in Cultural Analytics (CA), a transdisciplinary domain that brings together coursework options in Folklore, Environmental Studies, Philosophy, Comparative Literature, English, Media Studies, and more.

Cultural Analytics is distinct from the Digital Humanities minor: CA is more tightly focused on applying statistical techniques to the study of culture, while DH is a broader term that also encompasses the making and critique of digital cultural objects. Still, there is significant overlap in the requirements, so students majoring in Data Science and emphasizing Cultural Analytics may wish to consider minoring in DH, as well.
